The Who, What, When, Where, and Why of the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society

The Who, What, When, Where, and Why of the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society

Established in February of 2023, the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society is a members-only dining and entertainment extravaganza.

Boasting a convergence of talented chefs, receptive palates, unique performances, and handcrafted cocktails, each supper offers an unparalleled evening of entertainment that is designed to evoke an appreciation of the present moment.

The History of Supper Clubs and the Inspiration Behind the Secret Supper Society

First rising to popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, supper clubs have cultivated communities for decades by melding the best parts of an exclusive restaurant, intimate dinner party, and lively social destination together.

With this history in mind, the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society was born out of the desire to create a space where community, entertainment, and the culinary arts are intertwined.

“The purpose of the Secret Supper Society is rooted in reigniting the essence of yesteryear’s supper clubs,” said Christy Cox Spencer, Robert Hall’s Proprietor. “I want people to feel excited about getting dressed up to go to dinner—and not just a quick dinner at a bar, but one that features a full night of music, performances, exceptional food and drinks, and even better company.”

In addition to providing members with an unforgettable experience, the Secret Supper Society also aims to provide chefs local to Winston-Salem with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, push culinary boundaries, and experiment with new techniques.

“The Secret Supper Society would not be possible without the help of Lisa McMullen and Project Short Street,” said Christy. “Lisa and her team are raising the bar on shared-use kitchens by offering a state-of-the-art facility that provides a turn-key model for cloud kitchens, caterers, food trucks, product developers, and chefs. They have a network of more than 70 up-and-coming and seasoned chefs that we’ll be sourcing from for all of our dinners.”

What to Expect from A Society Event

In the past year and a half, the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society has hosted seven individual events:

  • The Winter Cabaret: A Copacabana-inspired five-course dinner and burlesque show.
  • The Spring J.A.M. Session: A night of jazz performances, drinks, and tapas dishes in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month.
  • The Americana Cookout: An elevated Fourth of July cookout experience with live bluegrass performances.
  • Brunch & Bubbly: A Southern-inspired brunch featuring specialty mimosas, Bloody Marys, and music performed by Duo Licht.
  • The Illusion Ball: A Halloween-themed feast featuring illusionists, magicians, and tarot card readers.
  • The Pride & Prejudinner: A four-course seated dinner accompanied by vignettes of a theatrical adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” by the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem.
  • Bourbon Curious: An exclusive bourbon tasting with Winston-Salem’s Broad Branch Distillery.

“The goal of the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society is to offer a unique and brand new experience every eight to ten weeks—no two events will be the same,” said Christy. “We try not to give away too much detail about upcoming dinners to our members, as themes are unexpected and each one is different. We always want our members to anticipate the next event and be surprised when they walk through the door.”

How to Become A Member of the Robert Hall Secret Supper Society

Prospective members have the opportunity to choose between one of two membership types—our premium membership, which is $50 a year, and our basic membership, which is $25 a year. Upon joining, members receive invitations and have the opportunity to purchase tickets to all of our events regardless of which tier they decide to join. However, premium members are afforded additional benefits like exclusive pre-registration and access to private receptions held prior to every event.

Tickets for each individual event range from $65 to $150. As a member you can purchase as many tickets to any one of our events as you’d like—there is no cap. This means you can invite non-members to our events and couples or families don’t have to worry about purchasing multiple memberships.

“Ultimately, we’re curating a community of people who can appreciate culinary arts and intentional living,” said Christy. “The goal is to attract people who can anticipate that next gathering and see the value of spending $65 to $150 on an event ticket.”
