Winston-Salem’s Racing Heartbeat: The Legacy of Bowman Gray Stadium
Few cities in America wear their motorsports roots as proudly as Winston-Salem, North Carolina. From the roar of engines circling a quarter-mile oval to the thrill of national NASCAR stars returning to the same ground where legends once raced, this city’s identity has long been intertwined with stock-car racing.
It’s not just history–it’s a tradition very much still alive today.
A Historic Home for NASCAR: The “Madhouse”
At the heart of Winston-Salem’s racing story is Bowman Gray Stadium, a uniquely storied venue nestled around a football field. Built in 1937 and soon transformed into a racing battleground, it became one of NASCAR’s earliest weekly sanctioned tracks by 1949.
From Hall of Famers like Richard Petty and Junior Johnson dominating Cup races here in the 1950s and ‘60s to the spirited, wheel-to-wheel madness that earned the stadium the nickname “The Madhouse,” this quarter-mile bull-ring has been a proving ground for racers and a magnet for enthusiastic fans.
Today, Bowman Gray isn’t a dusty relic–it’s a living, breathing racing hub. Every spring and summer Saturday night, thousands of fans pack the grandstands and bring that same eclectic energy to NASCAR’s Weekly Series races across multiple divisions.
Now, the city’s rich racing culture has captured the country’s attention once again.
The Clash Returns
After more than five decades since Cup Series racing last competed at Bowman Gray, NASCAR’s preseason exhibition event The Clash returned in 2025. The night was sold-out, unforgettable, and a testament to Winston-Salem’s enduring place in motorsports.
Thanks to ongoing investments, infrastructure improvements, and a long-term partnership between NASCAR and the City of Winston-Salem, The Clash is set to return again next month, and the buzz couldn’t be higher.

The Nash: A Celebration of Wheels, History, and Community
Coming soon to downtown Winston-Salem, The Nash represents the next chapter in the city’s long-standing relationship with motorsports, and it’s one we at Robert Hall are incredibly proud to be a part of.
Housed in a building with roots dating back to the late 1940s (once a Nash Motors dealership and later home to the Win Cup Museum) The Nash was born from our city’s automotive and racing heritage. That legacy is woven into the space itself, serving as a tribute to the craftsmanship, competition, and community that defined Winston-Salem’s role in NASCAR history.
Just as The Clash brings NASCAR back to where it all began, The Nash is designed to keep that spirit alive beyond the track. Be sure to follow The Nash online at @TheNashWSNC to keep up with the venue’s progress and future events.
